York guests driven home to Spain

THE owner of a York guest house did not just go the extra mile for his guests when they were stranded due to the Icelandic volcano – he went more than 2,000 miles for them.

David Leedham, who owns the York House in Heworth Green with his wife, Kath, was playing host to a Spanish couple visiting their daughter at York St John University when flight restrictions hit the UK.

He said: “They asked if they could book their room for another three days until a flight became available, which we arranged. But on Monday their daughter came to the house very upset.

“There had been a death in the family in Spain, and the couple wanted to get back there as soon as possible.”

David looked at alternative options for Jose and Roldau Trigueros-Ramirez, including using local taxi firms to drive the couple to Barcelona.

He said: “I tried various firms because the train companies were really busy and got quotes from £750 to £3,000. In the end we decided it would be cheaper for me to drive them to Barcelona where they could catch a train home.”

After renting a comfortable car, David and his friend, Martin Vaughan, set off with the couple to Dover at 1.30pm on Monday.

They caught the ferry to Calais, drove through France and Spain to Barcelona with Martin and David driving in shifts. He said: “We got a bit lost in Paris and had to pay a taxi driver 40 Euros to lead us in the right direction. But we finally arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday morning.

“We agreed that we would only charge the couple for tolls, ferry fares and food on the road, so in the end it cost them £1,500 to get to Barcelona, which they were more than happy with.”

We agreed that we would only charge the couple for tolls, ferry fares and food on the road,

so really you took the trip using the wrong vehicle insurance

if you take someone in your car and they say i will give you the petrol money or buy you dinner etc and you accept its hire and reward

you have just admitted that you took money for tolls, fares, and food on the road, now thats HIRE and REWARD, check on your vehicle insurance policy, it clearly states what is not covered, hire and reward

Well I think it was a lovely thing to do and I am sure that the couple were very grateful to get home following a family death.

Well done you I say !

Well done and what a nice way to promote York.

As for Puffing or should I say "Silly" Billy, do sit down and take your medication. If as Mr Leedham says they only took Ferry fares, Tolls and Food costs for the trip I would suggest that means costs were in effect shared and therefore not coming under hire and reward rules.

Not only pedantic, but also wrong.
Hire or reward covers payments in cash or kind that would give the passenger the *right* to travel in that manner. These people had no such right, as they did not pay or contribute towards the actual trip itself, and there was no agreed service being offered - tolls, ferry fares and food are all consumed by the passenger, provided by external sources,, so the driver is not the beneficiary. Had they asked for a donation towards time lost, or as a goodwill gesture, you'd have a point. As is, you don't.

Hi thanks for your comments good and not so. All I did was help someone out that needed assistance. If I was in their situation I would be glad of any help offered.I try to remember what my mum taugt us "if you cant do a good turn for someone do not do a bad one"If by helping anyone out I breach rules and regulations or am not politically correct thats tough,As I said all I did was help out in a difficult and distressing situation.D.P.L.

I'm Rocío, daughter of the family. I have to thank David for what he did. I didn't know how to send my family back home (to Spain) and David oftered to help us. There wasn't any kind of economical reason behind his good intention. He really has good friends in Spain. You could not have done better, I wish there were more people like you in the world. Thank you very much David!!!!
