A MINDLESS vandal has sprayed graffiti at several of York’s most historic sites.

The latest vandalism was spray-painted on to Clifford’s Tower on Saturday night, and contained messages such as “Brain post mortem” and “x hatch implant killer”.

Also included was a link to a social networking site, which included references to blowing up Ministry of Defence locations in Yorkshire.

English Heritage, the body responsible for Clifford’s Tower, said the damage was shocking.

A spokesperson said: “We are naturally shocked and disappointed that Clifford’s Tower – one of York’s most popular visitor attractions – has been targeted in this way.

“English Heritage will be liaising closely with the police who will be making a site visit on Monday to investigate the matter further.”

North Yorkshire Police were unable to comment on the incident, but it is thought the graffiti may be related to other incidents at the Hospitium and the observatory in the Museum Gardens and on the city’s Bar Walls.

York resident Kate Crookes was at Clifford’s Tower to watch the Saint George’s Day parade on Sunday when she saw the graffiti. She said: “I think it’s disgraceful, absolutely disgraceful. The tower is part of the heritage of the city and one of the first things visitors see when they come to York.

“Anyone who would do that has no respect for the history of the city.”

Another York resident who did not wish to be identified said the graffiti was “absolutely appalling”.
