The Archbishop of York flying the flag for St George

THE Archbishop of York was flying the flag for St George’s Day when he hosted a Kwik Cricket match at his home.

Dr John Sentamu wanted to celebrate the saint’s day by inviting Year Six pupils from the Archbishop of York Junior School to play at his home, Bishopthorpe Palace, where the English flag was displayed.

The youngsters made gingerbread biscuits and were each given a miniature St George’s cross.

The archbishop, who was this week made an Ambassador of the city at the York Tourism Awards, this week urged people to “rejoice in the land that we live in”.

“Though I am Ugandan by birth, I am proud to live in England and wave the flag of St George,” he said. He said he was shocked by a recent report which found that only ten per cent of people would be happy to fly the national flag. “To be patriotic is to appreciate, and be grateful for, all that is valuable in the country you live in,” he said.

Bit ironic when he isn't even English.

Not really ironic, just totally expected. This man will support anything as long as it gets his photo published.

Rubbish - both of you. His ethnic origin has nothing to do with this - nor does he care about publicity. As usual, HE is the only one talking sense, and seeing things in a positive light.

I suggest you take out your dictionary and look up both the words "ironic" and "patriotic".
Your comment says a lot more about you than it does about the archbishop.

Well done to the Arch Bish.
Shame on the 90% who wouldn't even fly the flag of their own nation.

Right on, MAZ7584.
Dr. Sentamu is a fine man in ever sense and always supports this country whenever he does.
Because he was born in Uganda is irrelevant.

Unfortunately, the far right appropriated the English national flag, which is what still makes a lot of people uncomfortable about flying it. It's a great shame, but, thankfully, this does seem to be gradually changing, so hopefully, the stigma will completely disappear eventually. I mean, the Scots, Welsh and Irish aren't frightened to fly their flags and celebrate their culture, so why should the English? We have one of the richest, most tolerant cultures in the world, so let's show how pleased we are to be part of it. Good on the Archbishop for leading the way! And down with the parochial insular miserablism from some on here. Go get some prozac.

He's already been offered it, in fact pestered by it and quite rightly turned the trash down.
Do your homework!

Just done a search on 'Sentamu' in The Press archives. I guess I owe the bloke an apology as there are actually a couple of days this year when his name didn't appear.

I understand this great Palestinian Turk St George was the first Muslim Saint. He's called "Khizar the Great" in Islam and slaying a dragon today would warrant being locked up for cruelty to animals.

You do write some rubbish on here don't you. You forgot the slight detail that he was also Roman. Didn't it tell you that in the Mail?

There is no definite proof that he even existed, nevermind being a Roman. Clever Cloggs!

Haha Garrowby, oh NO you swore at me, how daring. If you really have to resort to insults you're really not worth the time of day!
.
On topic, the little we know about George suggests that he was born to Christian parents and became a Roman fairly early on. Trying to scaremonger people by saying that traditionally he was a muslim is just rubbish. Sorry, but it is.
.
And LittleTed, if you're objecting to me suggesting 1fact about a mythical figure - perhaps you may also object to the 4 or 5 that Garrowby tried to spew out. Or would that be crediting you with too much consistency? .
Now I remember why I try not to come on here. You get drawn into bickering with kids.

Littleted, a highly educated historian who finds 'Don't let the door smack you on the way out' hilarious. I think the key word is wiki! I know you'd love to stop my right to reply by trying to predict it - am I a bit too much of a challenge? Sorry. Well just don't start historical quibbles you can't get out of then, I would suggest. After-all, I have only replied to each comment made towards me, so you're just as guilty Schama!

Where does Sentamu stand on shoplifting, does he encourage it like the Rev Tim Jones does?

Its a shame that for two years running Sentamu has missed the St Georges Day parade by the scouts and guides in York - especially as St George is the patron saint of scouting...

the use of capital letters for he is inappropriate. Whilst it may be seen to be shouting or emphasising in our current all embracing electronic world, it is escalating his status to something rather more than worldly in older spheres. He's just a man, and actually a very fortunate man with infinite capacity to choose what he may or may not decide to comment or participate in, not to mention access to free speech. Let me think now ...Uganda? or a palace in a quiet rural district?...doesn't take a genius really.
