Pay shock for former Sessions of York workers

MOST ex-employees of Sessions of York are not expecting to be paid for their work this month after the business appointed administrators.

Employees met at the factory on Huntington Road yesterday to try to find out more information from administrators P&A Partnership.

Martin Dawson, a warehouse worker who had been with the company for 16 years, said only employees who were paid on a four-weekly basis would be paid, because they were paid on Wednesday.

Other employees paid in different ways, such as monthly, would not be paid. He said: “Everybody is in a state of shock.” He said the administrators told employees to return on Thursday to fill in forms for statutory redundancy pay.

Mr Dawson said: “I’ve fallen on my feet because I’ve got another job. But my wife was employed here as well and she will have to look for further employment.

“It’s always been a family-orientated company, so there are a lot of scenarios where both partners have lost their jobs.”

Ray Stevenson, a 64-year-old engineer, was expecting to retire in October after 24 years with the business. He said he was concerned what would happen to his pension.

“Things have not been very good for quite a number of years, but then it seemed the place was overrun with work over the last few months,” he said.

“It seemed to pick up a little.”

A 43-year old single mother, who did not want to be named, said: “I’m a single parent on the breadline, so it’s a lot to take in. You fill your forms in, and there’s nothing you can do other than put your life in someone else’s hands.”

A union official met employees at Sessions yesterday to offer support.

Steve Hart, of the Unite GPMU union, said it was offering its 46 members at the firm training and help to find further employment.

A spokesperson for the administrators, P&A Partnership, declined to comment on the employees’ claims

I know lets organise a march from Sessions offices to all of the other printing firms in York and try to force them to take on all of the former Sessions staff to do the work that they would have done had their employer not gone bust. Oh sorry, I forgot this is the real world not planet RMT....

On a serious note my commiserations go out to the Sessions staff, but they can take heart in the fact they haven't got the RMT fighting their corner.

Totally different circumstances Sessions problems were brought by lack of work in the print industry, the work still needs to be done on the railway, the Jarvis contracts will be re-let by Network Rail to another contractor and no I am not an RMT member, but am an ex Jarvis employee. With what happened to me (not paid etc) I feel for the Session's staff.

Their wages should be paid out before any other claim on assets, but I bet the directors will get their bonuses first

I find it amazing when a such a 'so called' good family business as Sessions can actually leave their staff that have worked for them for years high and dry for a measly months wages , dispicable.

It would be a shock if anyone other than directors asset stripping potentially insolvent businesses got paid. Thisi s the risk you take being an employee paid in arrears monthly. People should start insisting on weekly cash pay again, that should force out potentially insolvent employers into the open.

To be told you're out of a job must be terrible, but to be told you're not even going to be paid for the work you have already done is a double blow. People are counting on this money, it's absolutely dreadful.

To allow people to work for you when you know there's a real possibility that you won't be paying them is disgraceful. Sympathies to all ex-Sessions staff.

So there is no more print work out there in the big wide world?

So in fact not that different, it just goes to demonstrate that the Rail Workers, or at least their Union, seems to think that they are in some way special and that the rules should be changed to allow them to benefit where others suffer.

They should be ashamed!

PKH - In fact, we were totally snowed under with work and were working overtime to clear the back-log. The main reason (apart from some incredibly bad management) was the paper cost increases (up to 30% over the last 18 months), so please try and get the facts right before assuming we had no work. And yes, getting paid monthly in arrears is bloody awful - we've been shafted good and proper. Good luck and best wishes to everyone - I'll miss you all :(
