A CLARION call has been sent out to Labour supporters in the new Selby and Ainsty constituency as the party’s candidate launches her campaign.

Jan Marshall will contest the seat, formed after the redrawing of electoral boundaries, and has pledged to put the fight for local jobs and investment at the forefront of her quest to become the area’s MP.

Although the boundary changes have left her with a tough task, she is being backed by Labour’s former Selby MP John Grogan, who decided to stand down ahead of the election.

He said: “Given the boundary changes, Jan is the underdog, but I know she will fight for every last vote.

“She is rooted in the constituency, and the fact she is the first woman to stand in the area for a major political party since 1983 will also count for something at the ballot box.”

Ms Marshall, who lives in the constituency at Saxton, near Tadcaster, said her chief objective was to “invest locally in public expenditure schemes”.
