CULTURE Secretary Jeremy Hunt has thrown his support behind the York 800 celebrations.
The Minister said the 800th anniversary of King John granting York a Royal charter, which allowed it to take charge of its financial affairs, trade freely and create a council led by a mayor, was a reminded of the “incredible role” the city has played in the country’s history.
“Over the years, it’s served as a place of conquest and rebellion, a centre of trade and enterprise, and one of our great seats of religion and learning,” said Mr Hunt.
“The fantastic thing is that so much of this extraordinary past lives on in its architecture and various cultural attractions. The York 800 festival will bring this heritage to life like never before, and in an Olympic and Diamond Jubilee year, when so many eyes will be fixed on Britain, I can’t think of a better moment to tell that story.
“So I wish you all the best of luck in this landmark year, which I am sure will boost civic pride, attract more visitors, and pave the way for an exciting future for the people of York.”
