Calling all York residents who have a story to tell about the city; York 800 wants to create an archive of audio and video stories about the city - ‘York Stories’ - as part of the celebrations, to record why York has played such an important role in people’s lives.
Cllr Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for leisure, culture and social inclusion, explains : “When we launched York800 in July last year we asked people to suggest to us ways of celebrating this unique year in our history.
“York Stories is not about family histories. Instead, we are looking for people who have a special story to tell about this fantastic city. It may be something about your work in the city, how you met and married someone special in the city or an experience you’ve had that means York holds a special place in your heart”.
If you would like to get involved in telling us what is your special link to York, please email york800@york.gov.uk so we can be ready to officially launch York Stories in March.
Organisers are already working with ward committees across the city to identify individuals and whole communities who may have great stories to tell. The aim is to deposit some of the best stories in an Archive of the Year, which will ultimately be lodged in the city archives.
The York Stories team will be working with North Yorkshire artist Kane Cunningham to choose some of the 800 best stories.
They will become Time Capsules and be lodged discreetly in the city walls, with new technology providing a very ‘local history’ walking tour around the walls.
