Have you heard about York’s civic archive?
The city has preserved thousands of documents recording 800 years of local history, from the earliest parchment of 1155 to last week’s council minutes.
This archive is a treasury of stories about the people who have lived and worked in York since the 12th century, from mayors to street-sweepers, from tram conductors to single mothers.
Many of these stories have lain hidden in un-catalogued papers, photographs and maps until now. This summer they will be opened up with a major exhibition at York Explore.
The exhibition will celebrate the bits of York’s history that you may not have heard about yet, as chosen and researched by a group of York volunteers. At the same time a project archivist will create the first online database of the collection to make York’s history available to more people than ever before.
A programme of talks, walks and workshops with historians and authors will accompany the exhibition as part of the Big City Read.
