Tang Hall Primary School will be hoping to outstrip their York Schools League opponents this season in their brand new kit.

The school have received a £400 Football Foundation grant because of its charter status and the strip will be christened by the year five and six team against New Earswick when the season restarts early next month.

Home and away kits have been bought with the money and Tang Hall are bidding to build on their 100 per cent start to the season after victories over St Lawrence's and Copmanthorpe.

Midfielder Shauna Jerrold, nicknamed Shauna 'Gerrard' after talismanic Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, will continue to skipper the side who look to her for inspiration despite being the team's only female player.

About the new strips, teacher Martin Lumb said: "The kit before was very old and we were playing in three different strips with nobody's shorts or socks matching so the kids are thrilled by the new kit and can't wait to play in it."

Meanwhile, York schools Under-11s footballers put in their season's best display to beat a physical Spen Valley side 3-0 on a heavy pitch.

Goalkeeper Jack Anderson was on top form, saving two one-on-one attempts by opposing forwards, while centre-back John Poulter won the man of the match award for his tremendous commitment.

James Robinson and Tom Allen won the midfield battle and set up a fine breakaway goal for Josh Stilgoe.

Jack Ryder and Paul Winterburn then combined to set up Lewis Rhodes for the second and York sealed victory when striker Dan Wilson ran 40 yards down the right and blasted the ball home.

Manor School provided both scorers for the York side in a game refereed at late notice by Ben Ballantyne following the sudden death of scheduled official Malcolm Harrison. A minute's silence was observed before kick-off.

A strong start with Jules Gabbiadini bossing the midfield was transformed into an early lead after Tom Kite curled a low free-kick around the wall.

Spen Valley responded early in the second half with a lob over the head of the York 'keeper to put the pressure on the hosts, who only had a squad of 11 to play with.

But with almost the last kick of the game Jacob McCormick surged forward allowing Jack Wickham to cross for man of the match Jacob Gore to volley into the bottom left corner.
