I WHOLEHEARTEDLY disagree with Heather Causnett's reasons for supporting the ever-loyal Hugh Bayley in voting for a 90-day detention for suspected terrorists (Letters, November 11), and am glad that John Grogan did not cave in to the Labour whip's arm twisting.

It is very easy to bang the drum for the curbing of civil liberties when you are not from the communities it is going to affect. But such a measure would simply alienate the communities whose help we most need in tackling terrorism.

The police gave no acceptable arguments as to why they needed 90 days, it seemed like it was just an arbitrary figure pulled out of a hat.

The UK would have had the longest detention period without charge in the Western world.

If Mr Blair really wants to tackle the causes of terrorism he should bring our troops home and cease the increasingly belligerent comments he is making towards Iran and Syria.
