The finals of the York Amateur Bowling Association competitions provided five brilliant games which were all decided on the last end with a new name etched on to the singles trophy.

Jim Dalby (Poppleton Road WMC) beat the 2001 champion Brian Gray (Shipton). After trailing 14-9 Dalby surged to a 19-14 lead and while Gray pulled back to 19-19 his oppponent drew two brilliant winners to secure the title.

Peter Witherwick (Heworth Cons) retained the Consolation Singles Cup but only after a 27-end struggle against Billy Brookes (RI Corinthians) with the score reaching 20-20 before the game was decided.

Eric Ward and Stuart Smith (RI Amateurs) dropped a five on the first end of the pairs final to Andrew Brookes and Colin King (RI Corinthians). They recovered to lead 17-12 after 18 ends but Brookes and King were not finished and scored two, one and three over the last ends to win by one shot.

A late surge by Doug Richardson, Dave Harrison and Joe Cooper (Bert Keech) secured the triples title against Billy Brookes, Andrew Brookes and Tony Thornton (Railway Corinthians). Nine shots over the last five ends gave them a two-point advantage on the last end which was just beyond the Railway team.

Last year's pairs champions Keith and Nigel Ryder were joined by Simon Gill and George Scruton (Hull Road Park) to take the fours title 18-17 from Stuart Smith, Peter Wilkinson, Eric Ward and Eric Wilkinson (RI Amateurs) who still trailed by one despite winning the last two ends.

The trophies and prizes were presented by YABA president Steve Atkinson (RI Amateurs) who thanked his own club for hosting the event.
