CHEMISTS are set to be at the forefront of promoting sexual health in a new scheme from chiefs at Selby and York Primary Care Trust (PCT).

The PCT is working with pharmacies across the district to help young people get sexual health advice easily.

The second in a number of campaigns being devised by the PCT, the scheme is also being highlighted as part of National Sexual Health Week, which runs until August 7.

Figures have revealed the biggest increase in the number of sexually transmitted infections is in people under the age of 25.

Chiefs believe that chemists play an important role in providing advice and help at a time which suits young people best.

Kerry Wheeler, head of planning for Selby and York Primary Care Trust, said: "It is important for people to know that making positive choices about contraception and sexual health is not just for your physical health, in terms of avoiding infections, but also for your general wellbeing.

"If anyone is worried or unsure about anything relating to sex, relationships and contraception, they can pick up basic information from their local pharmacy or they can contact the local GUM Clinic or Family Planning Service."

In addition to pharmacies, people who want help and advice on sex, relationships and contraception can also contact the Monkgate Health Centre, York Genito-Urinary Medicine Clinic, as well as family planning clinics in Acomb, York and Selby.

For people under the age of 18 there is a helpline called Sexwise that offers free confidential advice on sex, relationships and contraception.

It is open from 7am until midnight, seven days a week.

Calls from landline phones are free and don't show up on telephone bills.

The number to call for Sexwise is 0800 28 29 30 and there is a website with further advice www.ruthinking.co.uk

Please note the phone service is for people under the age of 18.
