York City boss Billy McEwan has instructed last season's top scorer Andy Bishop to increase his pain threshold.

McEwan has also asked for patience during the development of Bishop's striking partner Clayton Donaldson.

Bishop completed 75 minutes at Sheffield FC - his second pre-season outing after a summer knee operation because of tendonitis - while Donaldson scored an excellent goal

Former Walsall forward Bishop (pictured) complained of soreness in his knee before he was replaced and afterwards McEwan said: "We are nursing him along a bit and he's still got discomfort but he's going to have to play through it. I had a serious spinal injury when I was a player and, if I had stopped every time I had a bit of pain, I would never have played again.

"If he wants to play he has got to take two Paracetamol and get on with it because medically he's sound."

Donaldson excited City's travelling support with an expertly-taken goal but McEwan warned against high expectations of the 21-year-old ex-Hull striker next season.

He said: "He is a young player who has got to be developed over a period of time. We are pleased with his progress but don't expect miracles.

"He will excite our fans and frustrate them, as will all the young players, but I am sure our supporters will be very appreciative of the age factor and nurse them along. I have committed my future to York City for a number of years and eventually I am sure we will have a smashing little football club."

Ex-Oldham midfielder Ashley Winn also played his first pre-season 20 minutes for the Minstermen after signing for the club on Friday.
