A North Yorkshire town was in mourning today following the tragic death of a young father who lived for his family and football.

Former York City player Nick Murphy, 31, was killed in a three-car crash less than two miles from his home in Tadcaster.

He was on his way to pick up his partner, Adele, from work when his Vauxhall Corsa was in collision with two other cars on the A659 at Newton Kyme just before 5pm on Tuesday.

Mr Murphy, of Eastfield Walk, Tadcaster, also leaves a six-year-old son, Daniel.

His widowed mother, Norma, was on holiday in Corfuwhen police broke the news to her.

Mr Murphy played centre-half for York and Exeter before moving into non-league football with Harrogate Railway. For the past few years, he had been playing with Tadcaster's Magnet Social Club in the West Yorkshire Premier League.
