Rising ski star adam lee is on the fast-track to international glory.

The 14-year-old Easingwold School pupil, from Clifton, York, has been selected for the English Youth Alpine squad.

Lee will train with the squad in February and will represent his country in the British and English Championships in Austria two months later.

The call-up follows a rich seam of form during the plastic slope season which has seen the teenager claim a number of top spots as well as a series of high-flying positions in open-age categories.

His list of achievements this season include (open-age standing in brackets):

European Junior One champion (6th); Welsh Open Junior One champion (4th); Welsh National Junior champion (5th); third in the British Championships (8th); second in the Scottish Championships (5th); first junior Celtic Cup, Llandudno; first junior Gloucester Qualifier; North East Junior One champion.

Lee began skiing around seven years ago with Harrogate Ski Club but now trains at Silksworth near Sunderland.

He is a member of the Easingwold School open team that have won through to the British finals of the English Schools' Ski Association downhill racing competition.

As reported in the Evening Press, Lee and his team mates won the national final at Swadincote, Derbyshire, to book their place in the British finals in Scotland next month.

Last year Lee and school pal Ian Stirk were selected to represent the ESSA in the Schools' World Cup in the Czech Republic.

RUGBY LEAGUE

York's young rugby league players are showing rapid improvement.

After a lot of schools' development work and last season's re-forming of the Under-11 side, progress is now being made on the pitch.

York travelled to Bradford Schools and came away with a 24-18 victory, outscoring their hosts five tries to three.

The excellent York defence was the key to victory with some superb tackling by Danny Allan, Eddie Bedingham and the inexperienced Tom Speck catching the eye.

Allan scored two tries, one being a great full-length of the pitch effort involving most of the team. David Richmond also scored two tries in his best ever display for the schools team. Matthew Fairclough, who worked hard in a good half-back combination with Ross Varley, also scored a try.

Training was taking place this afternoon at Our Lady's School.
