Happy Hambleton

The meteoric rise of Hambleton C of E Primary School, Hambleton, in orienteering circles has been recognised by a special award.

The school received the Selby and District Sports Council's team of the year award for 1999 and their trophy and certificate were collected by pupils, pictured above, Harriet Andrews, left, and Alice Leake.

They are just two members of an 18-strong squad at the school where the sport is blossoming after just three years on the curriculum.

In their first year they won their section in the Yorkshire Schools event and have since followed that with convincing wins in the Yorkshire Schools League and summer competitions, with a string of individual awards being earned into the bargain.

Their most impressive display came in the British Schools Championships in Watford last November when they were runners-up in the primary age group.

But the key to their success has been continuation and involvement of pupils at all age groups.

"A lot of schools tend to just open the sport up to older pupils," said Hambleton teacher and coach Martin Andrews.

"I try to have the children involved from year three onwards. It means that they get more than just one year competing and that we get a continuation of really quite experienced runners through the school."

Having achieved a remarkable feat and growth of interest in the sport on his own doorstep, Andrews is now hoping other Selby schools will take an interest.

"When we compete in the Yorkshire League on Sundays it takes us all around the county and there is quite a lot of travelling involved, but I would like to see more schools taking part at a local level in the York and Selby areas and hopefully we will be able to build on what we already have."
