Reader's letter

I congratulate the Evening Press for the excellent headline - Yellow Card For Store Over Disabled Access (April 6) - on the consumer matters page about the lack of access to a recently-opened shop in York.

The headline was quite right, the access to this once-accessible shop has been literally dis-abled! It seems from the article that this situation was entirely due to the disabling practice of City of York Council planners. How is it that when we are lucky enough to have a knowledgeable group of disabled people in the York Coalition that our council has not used them for advice on access and other related issues to avoid this sort of thing happening?

Are they frightened of the competition perhaps? Council officers are paid high salaries yet seem incredibly ill-informed while the coalition is apparently not funded but can provide a wealth of informed advice and information. I applaud the York Coalition of Disabled People for their yellow card scheme.
