TONIGHT we carry more reports of people taken to court charged with anti-social and aggressive behaviour.
Sometimes it can seem as if values such as courtesy and neighbourliness have succumbed to yobbishness and ignorance.
Happily, that is not the case. It is simply that acts of kindness rarely make the news.
Today one of our local heroes enjoys some long-overdue recognition. York pensioner Winnie Starkey is a pillar of the Tang Hall community. She makes it her business to help. Mrs Starkey shops for disabled friends, makes bacon butties for the binmen and hosts children's parties.
We are always hearing about the neighbours from hell. Winnie Starkey is one of that breed who rarely step into the limelight: the neighbours from heaven.
