Two larger-than-life characters will join forces tonight to raise cash along with the laughs for our Hospice 2000 Appeal.

Former England and British Lions Rugby Union player Gareth Chilcott, and one of Liverpool's current comedy talents, Sean Styles, are the latest in the line-up of top after-dinner speakers at the next York Sporting Club Dinner.

Gareth Chilcott achieved league and cup medals with Bath, represented England over five years and toured with the Lions in Australia in 1989.

But he is now as well known as a commentator, and for his guest appearances on TV shows like The Big Breakfast and They Think It's All Over.

Stan Styles has gone from strength to strength since winning the title of Liverpool Pub Comedian of the Year in 1986 and appearing on television's New Faces.

He has worked major cabaret venues around the country, tours regularly with acts like the Drifters, and appeared with Sir Cliff Richard on the Roy Castle Cancer Appeal Tour.

Resident MC David Kendall said the two men would give the guests a great time at the dinner tonight at York Racecourse.

"The dinners are an excellent way of combining entertaining colleagues, clients and friends with supporting St Leonard's Hospice Millennium Appeal," he added.

York Sporting Club is run by Sporting Club (UK) Ltd, which runs similar clubs throughout the country, with membership open to both companies and individuals (both men and women).

During the black tie evening there will be the regular sporting quiz, spot prizes and a fundraiser for the hospice appeal.
