MATTHEW Hoggard, capped by England before Yorkshire, was finally awarded his county colours while taking three for 47 at Scarborough yesterday as Somerset were sent back for 182 on a green and lively pitch.

There was every indication that Ryan Sidebottom would also have been capped by skipper David Byas in a secretly arranged double presentation but the script did not quite go according to plan because the left-arm swing bowler had to be stretchered from the field after collapsing in agony in his run-up to the crease.

Sidebottom tore a muscle in his hip and will not bowl again in the match. If there is no improvement in his condition today, he will go to hospital for a scan.

It was only a matter of time before Yorkshire capped Hoggard after England sprang a surprise by giving him his Test debut against the West Indies at Lord's on June 29 and Hoggard was honest enough to admit that yesterday's award had not actually come like a bolt out of the blue.

"I had a bit of an inkling that I may get my cap because North Marine Road is the place where this sort of thing usually happens," said the burly paceman.

"I have been striving to get my Yorkshire cap since the start of the season and it is just as big an honour for me as being capped by England. Now I have got to go on and prove I am worthy of it."

Apart from the injury to Sidebottom it was an excellent day for Yorkshire who had progressed to 144 for three by the close when they trailed by only 38.

With a much stronger pace attack than Somerset, it came as no surprise when Yorkshire put their opponents in to bat and in the first over Chris Silverwood nipped one back sharply to give Australian Jamie Cox a nasty crack on the wrist.

It was Hoggard, however, before receiving his cap, who soon had Cox edging a loose drive to Richard Blakey and with the score still on 14 Mark Lathwell played on to Silverwood.

Sidebottom looked sharp until disaster struck before two further wickets fell with the total on 57, Gary Fellows coming on with his gentle medium pace to have Piran Holloway lbw and Peter Bowler mishooking Paul Hutchison to loop a catch to Blakey.

Somerset could not resist having a dart at short balls after lunch and after Michael Burns had edged Hoggard to Blakey, a bouncer from Silverwood hit Keith Parsons' bat handle as he took evasive action and Fellows made ground to hold a sensational catch at point.

Ian Blackwell hooked consecutive balls from Hoggard for four and six but in trying to drag the next from high outside off stump he presented Blakey with another catch. Fellows held another stunner at point when Graham Rose fended away a lifter from Hutchison but some of Somerset's best batting came from Rob Turner and Peter Trego in a 44 stand in 13 overs.

In an attempt to break it by adding some variety, Darren Lehmann came on with his left-arm spin and bowled both Turner and last man Steffan Jones in the space of one over.

Simon Widdup, playing in his first home Championship match, was straight into his shots with Vaughan and they had dashed up 49 in 11 overs when Vaughan tried to force Rose and was taken at second slip by Parsons who also caught Anthony McGrath after adding a sprightly 50 with Widdup.

A maiden half century beckoned for Widdup until he hooked Trego straight into the hands of Blackwell at long leg and it was left to Lehmann and David Byas to bat out the remainder of a long day.
