City of York I's terrible start to the North League premier division season continued as they lost 3-1 at home to Sheffield University Bankers.

With only one point on the board, City went into the match knowing their high-flying opponents had hit eight goals against Timperley last week, but they began with confidence in attack and played some inventive hockey.

However, their weaknesses - a disorganised midfield, a defence being pulled open and a lack of confidence in their own half - were exposed whenever Bankers broke away.

The Sheffield 'keeper denied City with a good save, with the ball falling nicely for a defender to knock it up-field to the centre-forward, who was in space and ran through to score.

City put the pressure back on and were rewarded when Mark Little flicked a short corner into the roof of the net.

However, fortune shone on Bankers again when a lifted ball into the City circle went unpunished by the officials and an attacker flicked it home.

City pressed for another equaliser but it wouldn't come and the inevitable happened when James Gilbert uncharacteristically lost possession and Phil Clark, facing four attackers, gave away a penalty flick which was duly dispatched.

City of York II had even less luck against Sheffield University Bankers II in division two of the East Pennine League, losing 3-0.

City had begun the brighter side but after a good opening quarter began to fade and Bankers came more into it, opening the scoring from a short corner.

City fought back and could have been awarded a penalty stroke when Chris Allerton was halted, the resulting short corner coming to nothing.

City were denied an equaliser when Nick Carter's shot from another short corner was deflected onto the bar.

Bankers added a second goal and were lucky again when City's Ian Butler appeared to be bundled off the ball in the circle without the whistle being blown.

That luck continued when Allerton, after being set up by Butler, saw his goal for City disallowed before Bankers broke away to complete the scoring.

City of York III maintained their unbeaten run in Yorkshire League division four with a 3-1 defeat of Wakefield III.

Late withdrawals meant City had to field a much-changed side and they struggled to find fluidity, however they opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Alex Fletcher set up Jason Bemrose.

Fletcher himself doubled the lead five minutes before the break and City notched a third when Bemrose hit his second after half-time.

Wakefield put on some pressure and netted a consolation from a short corner.

City of York IV were another side made to suffer by Sheffield University Bankers, whose fourth team won 3-0 in division five.

City started positively but their flow was interrupted by a 15-minute stoppage following an injury to a home player which required an ambulance.

City restarted with less enthusiasm and Bankers netted three times before the game was ended ten minutes early because of the state of the pitch.

Russell Grant gave City of York VI the lead midway through the first half at Huddersfield V after a mistake by the home 'keeper and there should have been more before Neil Reader notched his first of the season in the second half.

Huddersfield pulled one back late on but there was no real threat after that and the game ended 2-1.

City of York VII hammered Scarborough II 4-1 after a fine display to erase the memory of last week's 1-0 defeat by Normanby Park.

Boro took the lead, but David Da Silva and James Still turned it round before the interval and Dick Bowen and Chris Armstrong netted in the second half. Goalkeeper Ben Foster and defender James Owen then prevented Boro getting back into it.

Playing on a near saturated grass pitch, City of York VIII beat Brigg IV 2-1 despite falling behind to a goal against the run of play.

Roger Jackson equalised before the break and Graham Dent hammered home a deserved winner in the final quarter.

City of York Veterans suffered penalty agony against Chester in the EHA Veterans Trophy first round, losing 5-3 on spot flicks after the match, in which they had had chances, finished goalless.

City of York Under-14 boys were hammered 6-1 by a strong Rotherham side, despite taking the lead in the RAF Youth Cup clash through Alex Cockram and seeing fine displays by defender Jonathon Jenkin and 'keeper Nathan Sorby.
