WE are indebted to hairdresser Paul for telling us that we could enjoy a classic snack in more ways than one. Accompanied by Classic FM and ensconced in a comfortable settee we surveyed the menu.

It was limited but attractive and competed on our table with a copy of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians A-B. Had every volume been present it is doubtful if we would have known what food was on offer.

The day's specials were minestrone soup (£2.25) and fusilli bolognese (£3.75). However, for us lunchtime was long passed so even smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (£3.95) or poached egg on toast (£1.75) was more than we wanted.

A pot of Yorkshire Gold tea (£2.40) was called for. In fact it appeared in a cafetiere or perhaps 'the-iere' as the French would say. Together with further hot water we had more than enough to drink.

'Split muffin filled with your choice topped with cheese and toasted to perfection' so said the menu. As far as Ann was concerned mushrooms and tomato but no onions was a winner and certainly nicely presented. As it took her some time to eat it she had to be persuaded to select something sweet to make this survey complete. What could be better than roulade? Was this home-made? If not, it gave all the impression of being so.

I would have chosen from the sandwiches which included cajun chicken, mackerel or prawn at prices ranging from £1.95 to £3.75 but thought toasted crumpets had a certain ring to it. Two hot crumpets accompanied by wrapped butter in a small dish together with a dish of blackcurrant jam were excellent. Among all the sweet goodies on display I thought an Eccles cake would make a change. This was no average Eccles either by size or content. And what took me by surprise, it came hot. For flavour and volume of fruit content I haven't tasted better.

Is this venue going to succeed? Tucked away as it is behind the sheet music on the first floor we were the only customers during the 45 minutes we lingered there. I hope it is still there the next time we are in Lendal because I can't wait to have another Eccles cake.
