ON Wednesday, we accused officials at Malton Town Council of "unfeeling bureaucracy" for moving memorial stones without consulting the bereaved.

Today, we are delighted to report, councillors have shown their human side by apologising to those upset by this "insensitive" decision.

Their words will not erase the hurt caused to widower Ron Paterson and others. But they do show that the council is willing to listen, admit a mistake, and seek to rectify it. That is as much as we can ask for in a case like this.
