MR Lewis's strange letter about the lack of retail units proposed for the Tenneco site (March 23) deserves a response. Mr Lewis will have a copy of the planning brief for the site which is out for public consultation at the moment and residents' opinions will help shape the final layout of the site.

Mr Lewis is also a member of the Rawcliffe parish council which opposed the use of the site for retail purposes.

In the real world, local shops face increasing competition from the likes of Clifton Moor. Some communities have lost all of their local shops. Chapelfields is an example. Elsewhere, corner shops either stand empty or have been converted into takeaways or homes.

The additional trade provided by the people who come to live on the Tenneco development could help to sustain the existing local shops such as those on Shipton Road. The Tenneco residents will also have easy access to a large choice of shopping at Clifton Moor.

Mr Lewis would be more in tune with local opinion and needs if he supported the campaign by local Liberal Democrats to establish a teenagers drop-in facility as part of the new development.
