SIX hundred years of English music were being celebrated today as the York Early Music Festival was launched in the city.
Organisers of the festival were waving the flag for England and brandishing English roses in celebration of the launch.
The festival, which runs until Sunday, July 13, includes a range of musical performances at locations across the city.
Delma Tomlin, administrative director of the festival, said the launch was the culmination of a year's work.
She said: "The festival is about the music of England and the architecture of Yorkshire.
"Many of the concerts are sold out.
"This is what it's all about, it's the point of the whole year.
"We have got musicians coming from all over the world, and it's the same with our audiences. We are very excited."
