NORTH of England champion golfers from Pocklington School are the fourth best in the country.

They locked clubs with the best golfing schools in the country at Sherborne in Dorset - their third appearance in the English Schools finals in 20 years.

Pock had a tough opening against Canford. The first pair of Kyle Mathers and Craig Johnson won 6 and 5 but Pock's other pairs both lost 2 and 1.

They then lost to Millfield, a team of all-scratch players who included two players who had been in the qualifying rounds of the Open at Royal St George's, Sandwich.

The following day Pock defeated Perse School, Cambridge, 2-1 with Mathers and Johnson winning 3 and 1 and Michael Butterworth and Chris Gallon not losing a hole on their way to an 8 and 7 victory. Iain Gladstone and Edward Nutt were narrowly beaten.

In the other group, Tonbridge beat Bablake, Monmouth and Hampton schools to set up a play-off against Millfield, who won 3-0 to be crowned champions.

A stableford competition was played to decide the other places with no team able to beat par. However, Mathers and Nutt came third equal out of the remaining 18 pairs and with sound performances by the other pairs, the East Yorkshire school finished fourth overall.

Only Gladstone will be unavailable from next year's side and Pock start the defence of their Northern title, and qualification for next year's schools final at Walton Heath, in October when they play Bolton School. That match will be played at The Oaks, whose captain Gary Johnson sponsored the team shirts for the final.
