I WISH to correct your editorial comment relating to a casino at the Barbican development (March 9).

The planning application being considered does not have a casino.

Present legislation does not allow casinos to operate in York, but the Government is considering legislation to change the law.

If and when this is passed operators will be able to apply for licenses city-wide.

It is impossible to say how many operators will be interested in doing this but they would need to have suitable premises and probably require planning permission.

Then they could apply for a premises license. Clearly, it will be some time before this happens.

If the Government does change the law relating to casinos, all councils would then have to work within the parameters of that law.

Coun Gil Nimmo,

Chair, Licensing committee,

City of York Council,
