SCARBOROUGH marked their 125th anniversary with their first win in six games.

Keith Gilroy scored the only goal in the last minute at Nationwide Conference whipping boys Forest Green to wrap up three much-needed points.

On October 2 1879, a team played at North Marine Road under floodlights - courtesy of the Earl of Londesborough - with the opponents being from Hull.

As was common in those days, clubs played two codes of football and the game that was played was actually a 'handling game' rather than a 'kicking game', but the club has existed continuously ever since, although there have been one or two bumpy moments along the way.

On such a historic day it was fitting that a win should be recorded, but the winner came deep into stoppage time from the impressive Gilroy when he nipped in to convert a Chris Senior cross.

Earlier Gilroy had forced the home goalkeeper Dean Williams into two outstanding saves,

Debutant Kevin Townson, on loan from Rochdale, also went close while at the other end another new man, Peter Keen, formerly of Carlisle, produced a competent display in goal.

Forest Green have not won a game all season, while Boro's striking problems were again evident.

Townson had little support, while Robert Gill and Steve Burton have had their chances to impress and yet again failed to do so.

Boro coach Nicky Henry, however, was pleased with the result. He said: "The goal came too late for them to do anything about it and it was nice to see us getting the rub of the green for a change."
