HERE'S a promising collaboration between singer Sam Brown, usually to be heard belting out rhythm and blues with Jools Holland, and Dave Rotheray, songwriter and guitarist with The Beautiful South.
The possibilities of acerbic humour meeting a great voice certainly entice. In the event this pretty, but insubstantial, music works well fleetingly but fails to hold the attention. The tense dialogues that sustain The Beautiful South are missing here, where the vocal duties fall to Brown whose voice comes over as too sweet and lacking the strength of her Holland work. Rotheray was, apparently, influenced by the sound of the Grateful Dead classic American Beauty, a source it is hard to spot. Only the title track truly stays in the brain.
