I WAS annoyed by the way the BBC's Royal Ascot presenter Willie Carson tried to portray York as some strange provincial backwater totally overwhelmed by the influx of glamorous southerners who were shocked and amused by the coarse locals, inadequate amenities and other quaint hardships.

His comment that "Yorkshire people lack finesse, but know how to have a good time" made us sound like a county of grubby, toothless simpletons.

The annual Ebor meeting is hardly a village point-to-point; the course has not leapt to its current borrowed eminence from meetings attended by two scabby nags and a few paupers.

York Racecourse deserves more credit for its own meetings, which are as grand as Ascot, several times a year.
