PUPILS from Skelton Primary School were first to cycle their way over the finish line in York’s first inter-school virtual cycle race, organised by Cycling City York.
The two-week race began on March 1, and saw Elvington Primary School come a close second behind Skelton.
The aim was to encourage more pupils to travel to school by bike.
Each time they did, there were awarded miles for their team on a virtual journey between Land’s End and John O’Groats.
Skelton clocked up an impressive average of 53 per cent of pupils cycling to school over the course of the race.
They were rewarded with a trophy and £500.
Christine Parker, school travel advisor, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the level of interest and excitement that the virtual cycle race has generated.
The latter stages were really exciting as many schools were determined to have a final push to see if they could overtake some of their nearest rivals.”
