Arsonists strike at ex-mushroom farm near Thorpe Willoughby

ARSONISTS are believed to have started a blaze which tore through buildings at a former mushroom farm near Selby at the weekend.

The flames at the now-disused growing centre at Gateforth Park, near Thorpe Willoughby, close to Selby Golf Club, were spotted just after 1.30pm on Saturday.

Firefighters from Selby, York and Tadcaster were called in to tackle the blaze. They spent about two hours bringing the fire under control and were at the scene for some time after it was extinguished, to assess the impact.

The derelict buildings were destroyed in the incident.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service teams revisited the farm yesterday and said they believed the cause of the blaze to be deliberate. Nobody was injured during the fire.
