“LAV” was all around in the shadow of York Minster as campaigners formed a queue for the loo – with a serious message behind it.
The event was organised by local members of WaterAid, which is calling on Prime Minister Gordon Brown to tackle the global sanitisation crisis which kills thousands of children every day.
They were part of a global effort to enter the Guinness Book of Records by forming the world’s longest queue for the toilet and were joined by the Lord Mayor of York, Coun John Galvin and civic party members.
Spokeswoman Ainslie Waller said: “This action highlights the plight of billions of people living without access to a safe and a clean toilet.”
WaterAid is asking for the UK’s top politicians to take action at a high-level meeting on water and sanitation which will be held in Washington next month.
