Warning over bogus salesman

POLICE are warning members of the public to be on their guard against door-to-door salespeople claiming to be from the Probation Service.

Officers have received a number of calls from residents across the city reporting that men have called at their door and tried to sell household items such as tea-towels and dusters. PC Amy Littlejohns of York Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The Probation Service have not authorised such a scheme and we advise residents not to be taken in by the salesmen.”

Like the 'charity' bag deliverers, looking for empty houses and checking out their security before returning to burgle. Then when your insurance replaces the items they return again about a month later, and the cycle continues.

In the 70s it was common for ex- offenders to sell door to door as part of their rehabilitation, overseen by the Probation Service, selling pegbags, dusters and suchlike manufactured in prisons.
