YORK is to receive £100,000 of Government funding to help reduce the risk of flooding caused by sudden heavy rain.

The funding will be used to prepare a Surface Water Management Plan for the central York area, mapping areas at risk and identifying where action can be taken to improve surface water drainage.

City of York Council has successfully applied to a £5 million Early Action Fund For Tackling Surface Water Flood Risk, which offers grants of between £20,000 and £100,000 to help them prepare for flooding and reduce the risk.

Council leader Andrew Waller said the authority had been investing in solving problems caused by surface water drainage, such as becks and other water courses filling up with sudden downpours.

He said: “The success of the application from York shows how highly- regarded officers are in terms of developing solutions.
