Schools can confiscate danger drug

SCHOOLS have been given the power to confiscate mephedrone from pupils – despite it not being banned under the law.

Schools Minister Vernon Coaker has written to every school in England telling them they can seize mephedrone and all other “legal highs”.

Mephedrone, also known as Meow Meow or M-Cat, has effects similar to those of ecstasy. It has been linked this week to the deaths of two teenage boys, Louis Wainwright, 18, and Nicholas Smith, 19, in Scunthorpe.

East Yorkshire head teacher Jeff Bower welcomed the news but said firmer action still needed to be taken. Mr Bower, who runs Woldgate College in Pocklington, first spoke out when a student at the school collapsed after taking mephedrone earlier in the year. The incident led The Press to launch The Menace of Mephedrone petition, which has currently collected nearly 700 signatures.

“It’s a first step but a small one,” he said. “It’s like putting out a fire with a small drizzle of water. I can not understand why people are still dragging their heels to ban this drug when people are dying.”

Mr Coaker said the law gives teachers the powers to confiscate "all inappropriate items" irrespective of their legal status.

Schools are also under no obligation to return confiscated substances, he said.

Schools should be allowed to confiscate anything that would harm any pupil. What is worrying is how easy it is for kids to get hold of this drug. Not only via the internet but in the streets and around the schools. i whole heartedly agree with Mr. Bowers, Thank you for speaking up and stick at it Mr. Bowers, us parents need head teachers like you to speak out and help rid the streets of this rubbish. It is good to know that Woldgate College is on the ball and I am proud that my kids attend such a great college.

Mr B has no other choice but to 'speak out'. How many other schools in our area have had pupils collapsing with drug overdoses. Eh, that would be none then.

Ban this , ban that , ban everything, ban horse riding it's dangerous, just like cannabis, heroin, ecstasy, cocaine alll banned, thank god we stopped all that, that'll protect the children by letting them get their dirty drugs off some dodgy crook on a run down council estate, who may just have a gun handy to protect his drug related profit, I'm so so glad that you people live under such DELUSION as to believe that banning something protects people.

The government knows it doesn't, they know the increase in harm and crime that prohibition causes, they just daren't tell anyone.

I personally wan't my kids to be protected by the law, not caused even more harm by it. Why can't you people take your heads out of your proverbials and find out some FACTS!!

It's prohibition causing all thes problems, including the unstoppable rise in the use of legal highs!! WAKE UP!!
