Police hunt York city centre joyrider

POLICE are hunting a car thief who was spotted driving though York city centre on an early morning joyride.

Officers are now combing through CCTV footage of the city centre to track down the man who stole a white Ford Fiesta from Barkston Avenue in Chapelfields, on Wednesday evening.

Police say people enjoying a night out in York could help to identify the thief. York Police spokesman Colin Ventress said the man was spotted “driving dangerously” through York at about 2am yesterday.

The man was later captured on CCTV driving on the wrong side of the road near the Gallery nightclub, in Clifford Street.

The Fiesta was later found abandoned in the Tang Hall area of the city.

Detective constable Julie Carter said: “There were a lot of people in the city centre at that time of the morning, so somebody must have seen something.

“We would urge anyone with any information to come forward as soon as possible.”

Anyone who saw the Fiesta, registration M161 SWX, or who has information that could help police, should phone Julie Carter at York CID on 0845 60 60 247.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

This report indicates that CCTV is not watched over 24hrs a day but just recorded why ? the residents of York will have paid for the system why is it not monitored all the time?

The police should simply wait in Bootham Row car park. It's regular venue for the smashed-out-of-their
-heads wheelie brigade wrecking cars of dubious origin. Residents often wake at 3.30 am to the shattering of glass, the screech of tyres, the yelling of mind-addled abuse...
