Clarence Street crash man ‘stable’ in hospital

An elderly man badly hurt in an accident with a skip lorry is reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The man, who is 80 years old and believed to be local, was struck by the lorry in Clarence Street on Wednesday afternoon.

He was rushed to hospital and his condition was originally described as critical.

But York Hospital has told police the man is now stable, comfortable and “doing better than expected”.

The Press understands surgeons had to amputate one of the man’s legs.

The driver of the Martins of York skip lorry, a 29-year-old man, voluntarily went to Fulford Road Police Station following the accident and was interviewed by police.

No charges have been brought against him.

In the wake of the incident Clarence Street was closed, along with parts of The Groves and Lord Mayor’s Walk, causing long delays for commuters already affected by the closure of Gillygate for roadworks.

The roads reopened at about 8.30pm on Wednesday.
