Investigation launched after video shows lorry pushing car along A1 near Wetherby

A haulage firm has launched an investigation after a video emerged that appeared to show a lorry driver speeding along the A1 near Wetherby unaware a car was trapped under its bumper.

The mobile phone footage shows an Arclid Transport lorry travelling in the fast lane of the A1 near Wetherby, with a blue Renault Clio trapped sideways under its bumper.

Believed to have been filmed in January by passengers in a vehicle travelling on the same road, the driver of the Clio, who has not been identified, appears to be trying to release the car from the lorry by pressing the brakes.

A male voice can be heard inside the car from which the dramatic scene was captured, shouting: “He hasn’t even seen it.”

It is believed the driver emerged without any serious injuries once both vehicles had come to a stop.

The footage was then posted on a YouTube page.

A spokesman for Cheshire-based Arclid Transport, which specialises in transporting bulk powders and granular products throughout the UK, said an investigation into the incident had started.

“I’ve no idea if the video is genuine,” he said.

“We’re actually doing an internal investigation at the moment.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “On January 13 at around 8.30am we attended a road traffic collision on the southbound A1 near Wetherby to a report that a blue Renault Clio had been in collision with an HGV.

“At the time of our attendance there were no injuries and both vehicles were on the hard shoulder of the motorway. As a result, at the time, the incident was treated as a damage-only collision.

“However, in light of the new evidence that has come to light, we are reinvestigating the collision and the matter has today been passed to our major collision inquiry team and inquiries are ongoing.”

So why is the truck in the middle lane when the lane to its left is empty? Or didn't he see that, either?

I saw this happen once when a small van was changing lanes and was clipped by the lorry it was trying to pull in front of. The van was pushed sideways for a good hundred yards before the lorry stopped. I was in the outside lane and could only watch the terror on the van driver’s face. Thanfully no one was seriously hurt.

This is a hoax, your report says that the lorry was in the fast lane, where the alledge incident happened is a 5 lane section of motorway the inside two lanes are dedicated for the A64 Leeds / York, the other 3 lanes are the 3 dedicated lanes for the A1 northbound which means the lorry is in lane 2 of the A1 not the fast lane. The report also states that the police attended an incident on the southbound carriageway when the video shows the incident on the northbound carriageway. Cand we believe everything we see and read about?

There is no such thing as a fast lane on a motorway, just the inside lane and 1 or more overtaking lanes. A lot of drivers just lack lane disipline
