POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an incident when a lorry collided with the barriers at the level crossing on Wigginton Road, York.
British Transport Police said the lorry, which was heading out of York, did not stop as it approached the crossing at about 8.15am on March 3.
The barriers hit the top of the lorry between the driver’s cab and the trailer as they came down.
PC Nick Storey, one of the investigating officers, said: “Fortunately no one was injured, but the potential consequences if a train had been coming could have been tragic.
“We are working hard to educate drivers in the correct use of level crossings and the dangers that can be posed by misusing them.
“The statistics for accidents at level crossings make chilling reading and drivers must realise that there will only be one loser if crossings are not used in the way they were designed.”
Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040.
