Witnesses plea after lorry hits level crossing barriers on Wigginton Road

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an incident when a lorry collided with the barriers at the level crossing on Wigginton Road, York.

British Transport Police said the lorry, which was heading out of York, did not stop as it approached the crossing at about 8.15am on March 3.

The barriers hit the top of the lorry between the driver’s cab and the trailer as they came down.

PC Nick Storey, one of the investigating officers, said: “Fortunately no one was injured, but the potential consequences if a train had been coming could have been tragic.

“We are working hard to educate drivers in the correct use of level crossings and the dangers that can be posed by misusing them.

“The statistics for accidents at level crossings make chilling reading and drivers must realise that there will only be one loser if crossings are not used in the way they were designed.”

Anyone with information should contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040.

Do drivers really need educating about this? Surely only an idiot would try to drive through a level crossing with the lights on and barrier coming down?!

It's sometimes difficult to notice these barriers with your mobile in one hand and breakfast in the other.

Just shows it's not just some cyclists that ignore red lights

You'd need to have been born yesterday if you thought so..

Was nearly struck by a driver in James St this morning. He needed both sides of the road as he was eating an early lunch and apparently couldn't spare a hand to hold his steering wheel.
