Hundreds suffered broken bones in York during big freeze

MORE than 20 people a day suffered broken bones in York during the big freeze – an increase of almost two thirds on last year.

From December 17 to January 14, at the height of the winter whiteout, 605 people were admitted to York Hospital with a fracture. In 2008/9, the corresponding figure was 368 – showing a rise this winter of 64 per cent.

The worst individual day, December 28, saw 36 people admitted to the hospital with breaks, up from 11 on the same day in 2008.

Although the hospital does not record the cause of the fractures, staff believe the treacherous underfoot conditions across York were to blame.

David Scott, leader of the Labour opposition on City of York Council, said the statistics showed the need for a full review of the city’s gritting.

He said: “This vindicates what we have asked for – a complete review. A 64 per cent increase is a dramatic increase.”

He said some councils were increasing their gritting programmes, through funding from local health trusts, and said York should look at doing likewise.

City of York Council gritted round the clock at the height of the big freeze, but there was fresh controversy over the earlier removal of 200 salt bins across the city.

Council leader Andrew Waller said: “The executive had already asked the director of neighbourhood services to review the winter maintenance manual for the council and this is ongoing.

“Officers are working with the hospital and health providers to see what changes would be beneficial in the future.”

Unsalted pavements are to blame, but on Dec 28th who would expect crews to be out gritting pavements when the Christmas Pud is barely cold? Reply below...

GTBW, you always seem to respond to anything refering to the council with a negative comment, do you respond the same to the council where you live, about 20 miles outside York, what a kn@bhead.

It was a freak snow, not one council over the UK had every road gritted not forgetting cycle paths and foot paths blah blah. But our grit stocks lasted one of the longest and I'm very thankful I live on a bus route so my street was gritted but I fully sympathise with those who didn't get that luck. But what more could have been done? CYC has spent a fortune keeping us moving on the roads. I hate snow and cold weather with a passion but end of the day, we could have had it far worse.

I work in York, have lived in York, and spend most of my money in York. So does Mrs Turnoff and my children who all live in York. ERYCC get as much stick as CoYC from me, but I praise them both when they help us all out with life's problems.
BTW. Thanks for the insult.

GTBW, no problem with the insult, thanks for the thanks, just an observation but by your own comment, you admit that you give CYC and ERC stick, but praise them as well, now correct me if I am wrong, but can you point me to any entry you have on these pages, anywhere, where you have praised CYC, you have berated CYC on numerous occassions but I don't recall a single word of praise. Seems to me you are just anti establishment.

CoYC unless I am mistaken, have received an overwhelming share of berating from most posters here. I criticise them, justly I feel, for incompetence and I fear you are being naive to think they are otherwise. Most praise I have given the council, such as in the areas of hovercraft bays in Piccadilly, and coffin recycling have disappeared from these pages due to the length of time since they were published. Keep posting the insults though Kelly. I’m pleased there is one citizen of York at least who is content with ineptitude.

Could we have a further breakdown by gender and age.
I ask because the number of people you saw out in the snow and ice wearing high heels and slippons (and that's just the guys) will clearly indicate it's not the conditions to blame...
