Bootham residents fed-up with flytipping

A FRUSTRATED reader sent us this photograph he took of the rubbish that is repeatedly dumped near to his home by flytippers.

Chris Edghill, of Bootham Square, in York, said he was fed up with waste constantly building up in Bootham Row, behind the Bootham Tavern and Sainsbury’s Local.

He said: “I have reported this to City of York Council on a regular basis and they come and clean it up, but within hours it’s just as bad again. I just wish the people doing it realised that there are people living around here and it’s absolutely disgusting for us. It smells, it attracts rats and because it’s such a mess people even use the area as a toilet. It’s about 50 yards from my home and I’m fed up with it.”

Liz Levett, the council’s head of environmental enforcement and parking services, said they were aware of the problem and were working with local businesses to resolve the issues.

She said: “The bins are used by local takeaway businesses for commercial waste and have to be situated in this area so they can be collected.”
