Shock as runaway Toyota car hits Macdonald’s in Fossgate, York

SHOPPERS looked on in shock as a runaway car rolled down a street in York and crashed into a shop.

This was the scene after the silver Toyota Yaris rolled down Fossgate. It missed passing pedestrians and other cars, but hit the front of Macdonald’s furniture store.

Police at the scene said they thought the driver had left the handbrake off.

Martyn Macdonald, director of the shop, said: “I saw the car come on to the pavement and thought: ‘Crikey – that’s going quickly’.

“Then there was a bang and it hit a pillar. I went outside and there was nobody in the car. It looks like they left the handbrake off.” The incident occurred at about 12.45pm yesterday.

Now just sit back and watch the jokes about Toyota's brake problems roll in (bad pun intended)

Wait for the daft comments asking if it was an elderly women driver who left the handbrake off

Its a Toyota. Kind of makes it a joke anyway doesn't it?

Maybe they'll recall another million vehicles now to check for dodgy handbrakes.....

Did the Toyota think Macdonald's was a drive through burger bar?

The old lady was apparently on her mobile phone, she was overheard saying whilst getting out of the car..
"Just out driving my new Toyota, Chat later, can't stop!"

The Car in Front is a Toyota! .... That's because it can't stop!

I am waiting for Peddling Paul to tell us that they should ban cars/vans/trucks anything that was designed in the last decade from being on this road and that this article is testament to that viewpoint!

Also why do you always see 'Plods' standing like the one on the left? Do they learn that stance in Plod School?

Why wasn't the car in gear and the wheels turned towards the kerb like the highway code states it should have be?

Is that a shot of THREE coppers taking notes on the incident?

What a waste of public money.

Yes...I wasn't even thinking 'Toyota Jokes' - it was the three police officers looking at the car that made me laugh!

I like this comment.
Far too many people own and use cars without actually being *drivers*.
Bad roadcraft, no indicating, sudden lane changing, speeding, tailgating, inability to look ahead, not using mirrors, the list is endless.
All these things aren't taught in the driving test to placate some anal-retentive power freak, they are essential common sense skills necessary to modern day driving.
People who don't do all those things aren't just lazy they are deliberately anti-social and disrespectful.

excellent. Beautifully and correctly written. Concentrating on driving standards could have impact (no pun intended) on the amount of cars being used. We are allegedly a free country and it should be up to people to make their choices. But we are a very small overcrowded country and the introduction of something which will reduce the amount of ill equipped drivers (ie skill) would have benefits all round

Perhaps the driver thought Macdonalds was still the Electric Cinema and that it had become a drive-in...
