BHS outlets to remain in York

RETAILER BHS has said there are no plans to close its shops in York following the announcement that its Harrogate store will shut in May.

The Cambridge Street store is one of ten around the country which has been earmarked to close after the leases were sold to the Primark chain.

A spokesman for BHS said the Monks Cross and Coney Street outlets would be unaffected by the move.

He said: “The store staff were told of their store closure in mid-January, and are now in a consultation process with the relevant head office teams who will discuss their options and work closely with Arcadia brands and other retailers in the local area to support individuals to find alternative employment.”

Ah yes..but having the lease bought by Primark is hardly a step up a luxury retailer!
It's best viewed as a fun day out to see masses of salivating women getting their whole years wardrobe for a fiver :¬)

It would be hard to find anything more down-market and totally unfashionable than BHS.They say they are doing good business in York, which if it were true reflects very badly on those who do buy there.I have never seen such a hotchpotch of bad design and colours for both men and women.

I agree with all the above comments. BHS has been way off the mark for some years now. It had a brief revival a few years back with it's Homeware but that seems to be reverting back to tat now too. I can't imagine that their products fit in any market category - too dated/naff for anyone under 55 and too expensive for the working classes, the cafe is like a diabolical school canteen with very poor value for money.
I can see the chain being one of the next high profile stores to bite the dust. As much as I dislike Primark for it's poor quality imports (often made by cheap labour in poor conditions), I can see that they will be ready to step in to take over the prime City sites as they do have a relevant market - the Chav underclass is ever growing.

BHS is depressing - it reminds me of M&S in it's St Michael days before it got dragged into the relevant century.
Primark is more depressing though. A bargain isn't that much of an achievement if everyone else snapped it up as well! Yawn!

Business success comes from supplying a market - expansion follows if the market is large.

What a bunch of snobs I've stumbled across on this page.
I'm surprised you lot deign to lower yourself to The Press.
Shouldn't you stick to The Tatler or Horse and Hound?

Most of what they sell is imported from China, from the same factories that manufacture for discount chains like Primark, so why pay BHS & M&S prices for their label, when you can go to Primark or similar stores and save pounds? You only have to go into BHS during the week and see how empty it is to know they are struggling.
