WOOLLY ewes and their newborn babies proved a big success on Mother’s Day down on the farm when Askham Bryan College held its own Lambing Live event.

About 2,500 visitors flocked to the agricultural college’s farm yesterday where cows and calves were on show as well as ewes and lambs.

Several lambs were born as visitors watched from straw bales placed round the lambing pen, including one that needed a helping hand.

Elsewhere, calves were bottle fed and robot milking machines were on display. Members of the college’s horticultural department also built a garden from scratch.

Katie Pryor, the college’s conference and events organiser, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. It has been gorgeous weather and it was a really good atmosphere.”

The number of visitors were more than double that of a similar event last year.
