Nestlé workers across country to consider strike action in wages dispute

A RUMBLING pay row at Nestlé’s York factory is set to turn into a national dispute.

The Press has reported previously how hundreds of York craft and process workers voted overwhelmingly in a “straw poll” last month for a ballot to be held on industrial action over pay.

The vote came after the company rejected a claim for a 2.5 per cent increase – saying it would be irresponsible to raise wages in such tough times – but offered a higher factory bonus.

Members of the GMB and Unite unions voted 504-36 in favour of a ballot to determine whether they would support industrial action, initially short of a strike.

But now John Kirk of the GMB, who jointly represents both unions in pay negotiations, has revealed that another straw poll is to be held for members working at all Nestlé UK sites across Britain.

He said York workers had been the first to be faced by a pay freeze because the factory was first in this year’s pay bargaining round, but the same deal was now being offered across the country to all Nestlé UK workers, including people working in the coffee and water business.

He said that as a result, the “straw poll ballot” in York would no longer apply, and another such straw poll would have to be organised nationwide by the unions – with York workers having to vote again.

A Nestlé spokesman said: “The company will make every effort to continue the discussions through the formal channels.”

Mr Kirk had claimed previously that Nestlé was using the recession to impose a pay freeze for 2010, at a time when the factory was more productive than ever before and inflation had risen above three per cent.

But the company has said its “engaged and positive” workers had helped it achieve a good year in tough times and they would share in the success of 2009, but 2010 was set to be even tougher and more unpredictable, and it would be irresponsible to increase costs it controlled, including wages and salaries.

Nestlé don't get as much hassle with their employees abroad. The moral during recession is; employees are ten a penny, but employers are rare...

Very true. But we are English and it's in our genes to not be walked over.
I hope the workers get what they rightly should..

Sorry Little Ted, but nothing could be further from the truth. WE DO allow our selves to be walked over, thats why we are in the state we are in. Why?, because we either won't stick together to the end or we are to lazy. We have allowed the so called dogooders to dictate instead of chalengeing. Now look at us, unruley kids anti-social behaviour that the law does nothing about. Bring back conscription. Could go on forever. Sorry Ted we have allowed ourselves to be trodden into the ground. Nestl'e employees will be no different they will eventually allow themselves to be dictated to by foreigners, simply because they where sold down the river. I genuinely wish them all the luck in the world with their claim. There will soon be nothing left, whos fault is it. Only our selves to blame.

From one Maltonian to another. (Although many moons ago now) Some good points. Personally speaking I have always been, and I'm proud that I'm one to stand up to authority/management and Chavs and always will.
VICTORY TO THE REBELS!

what a load of cobblers Rsend.
`
The nationality of Nestle managers has nothing to do with it, the drive to increase profit has everything to do with it.
`
In common with many other bosses, Nestle are using the recession as an excuse to drive down wages and undermine conditions, even though they are already raking in massive profits.
`
Workers here are like anywhere else; we can be walked over and put upon so far, but no further. Everyone has their breaking-point as workers in Greece have shown in recent days.
`
Nestle management would do well to remember that; they might get away with attacking their workforce, but Nestle is as good a place as any to find the spark that ignites a wider fightback.

Lets hope the Netle workers tell their profiteering bosses that they cannot treat them like dirt--they make the money for them after all.A victory for one worker is a victory for every one of us--regardless of our nationality. The two old boys from Malton are living in a world most of us will be glad to see the back of.

little Ted, Probably a man after my own heart. Got into trouble many times for outspoken comments which is ok by me simply because the comment must have struck home and probably hit the nail on the head. As we all know "truth hurts". Unfortunatley it will take more us two. Keep up the good work.

Ah yes, we're the bulldog breed and johnny foreigner can go hang. Unfortunately bad dogs are put down and the same will apply to Nestle UK despite all the righteous indignation of the workers. In recessionary times it's better to hang on to a job rather than chuck it away. Time will tell but history isn't on the side of the workers.

Other major companies are on a pay freeze so why should they be any different...........
...They own a S*** load of money anyway!!! Welcome to the real world and recession!!

Plenty of people are having to have pay freezes/cuts/hours cut etc. Unfortunately it's the only way some companies are managing to stay afloat in hard times! They are still in the enviable position of having a job so should get on with it! I know a lot of people who are struggling on benefits due to being made redundant recently who'll do it if they don't want to! They'll also do it graciously! Sorry, but I've little sympathy for people who think marching up and down with placards will miraculously make the recession go away.

Have to agree with Hifive and JohnnyByrne, when in a recession the best thing to do is keep quiet and keep your head down, it will end and if you're lucky enough to still have your job then you can push for pay raises, etc., but to do it now is showing the big bosses at Nestle that maybe they should just send production over to Europe where the workers are more appreciative of a job - any job.

Ordinarily hifive I would completely agree with you and in a sense I do. It's madness that people kick up such a stink about pay increases when so much of the world (not just the UK) are struggling to stay in a job and provide for their family. "Redundancy is rampant so be thankful you have a job". OK so Nestle posted a 42% drop in profit for 2009 but when you compare that to a 69.4% ($15billion) increase in 2008 from the previous year and a hopeful 2010 they could at least consider a small increase for their staff.

There's a lot going on with Nestle at the moment with the buy out of Krafts' frozen pizzas section and I'm sure after selling Alcon to Novartis they'll be looking at other acquisitions. Their share prices rose by 14.3% which is only a sign on how confident their share holders are.

Come on Nestle, without your 'well oiled cogs' the machine will only break down!

It wouldn't be so bad blaming foreigners if your command of written English wasn't so appalling.

I'm sure there was a thing in the papers that during this recession, more chocolate was being sold as it was seen as an affordable luxury so sales went up. Can't say it was all Nestle but surely they must have made more money so they should reward the workers.

That's the end of chocolate being manufactured in Britain then! Who ever went on strike and got what they wanted and didn't lose pay or pension, or ultimately their job? They'd be better off starting a civil war and marching on the council offices!

Except we are British, English is a language not a nationality (check your passport)

And whether it is in your genes or not, it does not change the situation that PLC's are run for the benefit of the shareholders not the employees. In a depressed marketplace (which is what we still have) unskilled labour are ten a penny so the staff threatening to strike are only, ultimately going to hurt their own pockets.

It stuns me that the Nestle staff can't see it, but I guess there was a reason that they were unskilled labour!
