The old Peasholme Centre, in Stonebow, York, to be flattened

FEARS of vandalism mean a former centre for the homeless in York faces being bulldozed.

The old Peasholme Centre, in Stonebow, has been empty since its occupants moved to a new base in Fishergate last year, and now City of York Council has begun looking for a company to demolish the two-storey building.

The centre was originally relocated to make way for the authority’s proposed new headquarters at Hungate, and although that scheme was later abandoned, the need for better facilities for homeless people led to the Fishergate project continuing.

Applying for permission to knock down the Stonebow structure, the council said the move was necessary “to reduce the risk of vandalism and unlawful occupation”.

Neil Hindhaugh, the council’s head of property services, said: “There has been recent interest from the marketplace in developing this site for a range of employment uses which would provide jobs for people in York.”

What a sin not to use the building for a positive purpose until the whole site is sold on or otherwise developed.

Also, what an invitation to all the arsonists and chavs in town. Just remember the former shoe shop next door. This probably should not have been publicised.

While they are demolishing it why not demolish the new office block opposite - it has only just been built and looks condemned already - there must be so much empty commercial property in York why develop the site again - the building is perfectly ok the planning decisions in this City are a joke

I seem to remember that CYC gave severe structual problems at the Peasholm centre as the reason for closure and the move to Fishergate. Many suspected that the planned H.Q. fiasco was the real reason for the move. Would anybody agree with me that when a ruling party continually twist the truth for political expediancy they run the risk of forgeting the previous spin

The Peaseholme Centre does not meet current government requirements and is therefore not fit for purpose. Millions could have been spent on trying to refurbish it, or more prudently on a new site, releasing the capital from the sale of the land.

It's a shame when facts get in the way of conjecture and libel

Very good voice, however at the time you Lib Dems stated that the Peasholm Centre had to go because of structural problems the site was already earmarked for the Council H.Q. that particular fiasco had not even begun at the time of the CYC statement therefore there was no intention of releasing capital from any sale as there was no intention to sell it. game, set & match I think, see what I mean about forgetting previous spin folks! facts & libel? don't make me laugh! on the other hand, ha,ha,he,he

If the council organised with an agency to fill it with temporary residents or offered it to single people off their waiting lists there would be no risk - Publicising this is like deliberately leaving the door open and boxes of matches lying around, which is a favourite trick of landlords/ developers with a building they want to demolish (Nearly worked with the former Gimcrack coach house!)
