£1m to be spent on road repairs

COUNCIL chiefs have revealed the list of roads in York which are set to benefit from £1 million of extra maintenance cash.

The funds for repairing the routes were confirmed in City of York Council’s recent budget for 2010/11, with the largest chunk of cash being the £98,000 earmarked for improving part of Elvington Lane.

Elsewhere, £70,000 will be spent on resurfacing Stray Road and £17,000 on a stretch of Stockton Lane. Other roads targeted for work are Acorn Way in Woodthorpe (£55,000), part of York Road in Dunnington (£61,000), Heath Moor Drive in Fulford (£50,000) and Bootham Row (£40,000).

Another £188,000 will be devoted towards seven pathway repair schemes, including at Carr Lane in Acomb, Acorn Way, St Giles Road in Skelton, Sim Balk Lane in Bishopthorpe and Lendal Bridge. A £400,000 combined package is scheduled for other patching and drainage work on various other roads.

As per their own policy. Any roads where they have been informed containing potholes etc, or any area they have identified themselves should have signs up within 24 hours warning of such.
As there are no signs they really are leaving themselves liable to claims.

The claims will easily exceed 1m.

Is this £1m additional to the original anticipated highways budget for 2010/11? The Press report seems to suggest that it is.
The available funding comes from Council Tax plus some rate support grant. Note that Vehice Excise Duty (sometimes referred to wrongly as Road Tax) does not directly contribute to this.

The numbers are very low for resurfacing repairs also.
They are low as it will be half arsed job that will need doing again in a number of years and will degrade quickly in the mean time.
Spend a little more money now, a little more time, and then it won't need re-doing every other year resulting in a much greater cost overall

Im so glad that they kind find so much money for this and none for the disabled in our community who's homes they keep closing down and cutting respite care for those who desperately need it. Well done York City Council on getting your priorities right.

There's some easy money to be made at the moment tendering for these road repairs, it's easy to set up a company, a workforce is easy to find as the building trade suffers in the recession, you make your money with a repair looking good on the surface, then liquidate the company and relax in the sun in Spain.

I hope they prioritise cycle lanes first.

Carr Lane isn't that bad compared to the potholes that have opened up on Huntington Road and Water End. The only problem in Carr Lane is the blind bend in the middle of it, which IMO should have a double yellow line for around 100 yards either side of its apex. Sooner or later a side-on scrape caused by two oncoming drivers misjudging their clearance is bound to happen.

This could almost have been written by pedalling paul.
Is petethefeet an alias maybe?

Why not sort out the rotting speed bumps (i.e. get of them) before the CoYC gets sued by the thousands of motorists whose tyres and suspension are damaged by their frost-damaged edges? Speed platforms across the entire road are much more sensible; they don't cause the damage to tracking, tyre-walls and suspension that speed bumps do. Best of all, they offer cyclists a certain vertical exhilaration when traversed at speed...
