THE owner of a Jack Russell dog has told how she watched in horror as her pet was savaged by a bull terrier on the loose in her garden.

Anne Rennison said the bull terrier, which was with a group of children and not on lead, came into the garden of her home in Pottery Lane, Heworth, on Tuesday afternoon, before grabbing her ten-year-old Jack Russell terrier by the neck and “throwing him around” for 15 minutes.

The attacking dog, believed by police to be an English bull terrier cross, was eventually brought under control by its owner and has since been destroyed. The Jack Russell, called Radar, is currently seriously injured in a York vet’s surgery.

Mrs Rennison, 57, said: “I have never seen anything like it in my life and I don’t want to see anything like it again.

“The dog was walking along with the children and they followed it in. We couldn’t do anything – it was too dangerous and there were kids in the garden. “I called the police because I was scared it would attack them.

“My next-door neighbour was throwing things at the dog to try to get it to drop Radar, but it was no good. He’s just a Jack Russell – he didn’t have a chance.”

Radar’s ordeal ended when the bull terrier’s owner, who lived nearby, was alerted and brought the animal under control. Yesterday, Radar was still in the vets suffering bites to his back and shoulders.

A distraught Mrs Rennison said: “He tried wagging his little tail at us, but he hadn’t been able to move all day.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the scene at 4.10pm. The dog had been let into the garden by children and it then attacked the other dog. The animal was on the loose in the garden when we turned up and it would not let go of the other dog.”

He said police traced the owner and arranged for the dog to be put down the following day.

Nobody was arrested in connection with the incident.
